Cat Climber and Wine Holder

Wine Display

Made of poplar and laminated poplar to display a bottle of wine at 12 degrees.  I like the many colours that can be found in poplar. There are deep dark browns, almost black, in some of the laminated portions, a light green in the forward mount and a nice smokey grain in the base.

Three tiered cat climber

I wanted to make a cat climber that was attractive but could easily be stored away if you were entertaining. This climber is made of cedar and has three clip-on tiers that can be stored on the unit. the bottom tier is hinged and can be folded flat against the base. It is put together with knock-down furniture hardware and every part is replaceable should it become damaged.

Bug Lamp (hiru andon)

I had some wooden coasters and I wanted to make a lamp, not a lamp to flood the room with light or even a lamp to read by, just a lamp to enhance the mood.

I wanted a tall lamp to contrast the horizontal lines of the coasters. To add some interest to the lamp I followed the curving grain in the wood at the top.

This is the result... "hiru andon"    Translation = "daytime lamp"

BUG

If you look closely at the bottom left side of the lamp (close-up view in the photo to the right) you will see a bug forever captured right in the wood itself.

This combined with the glow off the brass backing resulted in the name "BUG LAMP".

Below is a picture of the lamp when turned on.

discARTed 2014

If you have not read my previous blogs, "discARTed" in a show of art created from discarded books from the library and books that are no longer salable.

My entry for this year, called "enLIGHTen" is a lamp that bi-sects a book and has a drawing of the Picton library on one side and the Books & Company book store on the other.

If GOOGLE is like a "hello",
a real book is like a "HUG"

Wednesday 2 April 2014

I first created this bench for an interior and landscape designer in Toronto. I liked it so much that I built another.
It's made of cedar and is approximately 60" x 18" x 18" high.

I wanted to try a different design and I built the bench below in an Art Deco style. It is made of cedar as well and is approximately the same dimensions as the one above.
