discARTed

discARTed

Below are two entries that I submitted for the "discARTed" show at Books & Company in Picton. The show is all about art created from discarded books that the local library and Books & Company had discarded.
"ShELF HELP" is a play on words just as discARTed is.

ShELF HELP

"The SECRET" is a piece with a bit of a magic trick that keeps the book floating in mid-air and is done to represent the freedom of print and the mystery contained in books.

Some Older Projects

Some older projects...

This is a cabinet that I designed and built more than 40 years ago.

Some folding screens that I made a number of years ago.

Above is a three panel screen originally made for a display of photos at a wedding and then converted to this Macintosh style screen.

On the right is a four panel screen with tree rubbings on muslin that I did in conjunction with my sister, Audrey Shimizu, an artist at the time in St. Catherines, On.
Below is a five panel screen done in black lacquer and a Japanese print.
An outdoor project from the past is this gate and fence that I designed and built for a yard in Hamilton.

A Privacy Fence

A Privacy Fence...
this years outdoor project was a privacy fence for the deck. It's made of Western Red Cedar, 2 x 4's that have been cut down the centre to create a finer contrast with the 2 x 4's  used at the top, centre and bottom of each of the four sections.

MOBIUS Gallery Items

I like to work with wood and I was invited to put some items into a small gallery called MOBIUS on the Main Street in Picton, Prince Edward County.

The first two photos are a wooden container that I made as a gift and can be used for storage or insert a milk carton and use it as a vase. Dimensions are approximately 4" square at the base and 13" tall.

Above is a dry flower vase approximately 4" square at the base and 13" tall. It is made of cedar and finished with beeswax.

These two small bud vases include a class insert.

This five foot bench is made of Western Red Cedar and finished so that it is suitable for either indoor or outdoor use.  Dimensions:    5' wide x 18" wide x 18" high

About Me

Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada
Before retiring I spent 25 years in the computer industry and another 18 years with my own business as an independent sales rep and a distributor in the cycling industry. I have two grown daughters, two beautiful grandchildren and still live with my first wife. I have always enjoyed woodworking and I have designed and built furniture, both indoor and outdoor. I have done extensive renovations, both interior and landscape. My sister and brother were both graduates of OCA (Ontario College of Art) and my daughter graduated from Sheridan College graphic arts program. I just go with what I learned from osmosis and observation. I enjoy craft beer, Italian food, and ice cream.
